2x4 CNC Routers

Introducing our new 2x4 CNC Router, the Shapeoko 5 Pro. This machine comes in three sizes, ranging from 2x2 to 4x4.

For those who find a 4x4 CNC Router too large for their space, the 4x2 Shapeoko 5 Pro is ideal. It's designed to be open from front to back, allowing full 4x8 plywood sheets to pass through the machine without the need for cutting them down beforehand, simplifying the process for larger projects like furniture or cabinets.

The Shapeoko 5 Pro CNC Router is crafted with precision engineering and high-quality components. These features contribute to its reliability in terms of accuracy, speed, and durability. Its user-friendly design and compatibility with advanced software make it suitable for both beginners and experienced users, across a wide range of tasks including woodworking, sign-making, and plastic fabrication.

The 4x2 Shapeoko 5 Pro is the perfect balance between overall size and versatility in a CNC router.

2x4 CNC Router vs. 4x2 CNC Router

The first thing to consider is the orientation of the machine. If it's a 2x4 router, with the 2-foot dimension across the X-axis and the 4-foot dimension across the Y-axis, then the machine will not be able to fit full-width plywood through the machine. If full-width plywood is important to you, then you must look for a machine that's 4x2, with the 4-foot dimension across the X-axis and the 2-foot dimension across the Y-axis.

Some people believe that a 2x4 machine is more rigid because the length of the unsupported gantry is lower. For Shapeoko machines, this is not a factor:

  • The Shapeoko gantry extrusion is very rigid. It was designed for spans of up to 8 feet, and it's very rigid at 4 feet.
  • The Shapeoko gantry is driven by two Y-motors, one on each side, to eliminate the racking that can happen with a single motor under the machine.

Is it a "True" 4x2 CNC Router?

Some companies are a little loose with the definition of "4 feet":

  • Does that mean the total travel is four feet?
  • Does that mean the work area is four feet?
  • Does that mean the machine can cut around a 4-foot part?

The Shapeoko 5 Pro 4x2 and 4x4 routers allow you to fit a full 4-foot part in the machine, with room for clamping on either side.

The X travel of the Shapeoko 5 Pro is just over 48 inches, so you can cut around a 4-foot part if you take the time to position it carefully.
